Writing this down, now:]
Greetings, Henrietta.
I would like to ask for a futon, and a good polearm. What can I give you in return for these items?

Why don't you think of a good story for me."

Sometime before dinner, this is sent over.]
I knew a boy, once. He was that quiet sort, a bit too soft around the edges and too easily led around by smarter people, but he was a good kid.
He met a girl while he was in the Service. She asked him for a light. He told her he didn't smoke. That made her laugh. "The clean sort, are you?" she asked him. "I should have figured. It's all over your face."
He bought her a drink. She drank him under the table.
They met again two evenings later. And again. And again.
They almost slept together just once. It didn't work out. They didn't hold it against each other.
So things stayed like that for a while, and it was all right.
When the sky disappeared and people started Changing and They started taking the Changed ones away, this kid and his girl didn't think that much about it. The world could go to shit, but it wasn't going to hurt them. They'd be fine.
One night, he came to the bar - their usual place - and she wasn't there. She told him she would be. He didn't think about it. Surely she just got busy. These things happen, right?
When a week passed without her, he told himself not to panic. It's been strange lately, that's all. She was fine. He'll see her soon. And he did see her, the very next evening. She had Changed.
She killed another man in front of him. It was easy, she explained. Just point, aim, pull the trigger. Be rational, she said. They gave me a home after I Changed. They gave me a job. This is part of it.
He looked at her. She was smiling the way she used to smile for him, but her eyes were empty. He thought about the gun in her hand. He thought about what she told him.
'Be rational'. It sounds so simple, right?
He smiled at her. Later that morning, while it was still dark, they went out to ditch the body somewhere safe.
I lost contact with him a bit after that. I hear, though, that he Changed sometime after his girl did. Prior to that happening to him, it's said that he was with her on every assignment, smiling, fighting and killing and stealing and lying nearly as well as she did.
I wonder if it was a relief for him, finally Changing. Maybe it made things easier.
